What Language Do They Speak in Portugal? Asking the Important Questions

Ah, Portugal. Land of sun, surf, and… what language was it again?

That’s right, folks, it’s time for another installment of “Geography for the Slightly Bewildered”! Today’s burning question: do they even speak a language in Portugal?

Fear not, intrepid explorers! For those venturing beyond the shores of their local beach, here’s a crash course in Portuguese linguistics (or should we say, Lusophone lingo, for those feeling fancy).

Is Portuguese a Real Language?

This may come as a shock, but yes, Portuguese is a real, live language, spoken by a staggering number of people (like, over 220 million!).  In fact, it ranks sixth as the world’s most-spoken language, which puts it firmly in that category.

So, They Speak Spanish in Portugal, Right?

Nope!  While Spanish and Portuguese are both Romance languages (meaning they share a Latin ancestry), they’re distinct languages with their own unique quirks.  Imagine the difference between, say, Swedish and Norwegian. Different vibes, different vocabulary, different ways of saying Can I have another pastel de nata, please?

Why Haven’t I Heard of Portuguese Before?

Maybe you haven’t vacationed in Rio de Janeiro or Lisbon lately (side note: either is highly recommended).  Portuguese is actually spoken in a bunch of countries around the world, thanks to a little thing called colonialism.  Brazil, Angola, Mozambique – all part of the Portuguese-speaking world.

So, What Should I Say When I Visit Portugal?

Well, Olá (hello) is a good start.  They also appreciate a good attempt at Obrigada (thank you) or Obrigado (thank you – masculine).  Beyond that, a smile and some enthusiastic hand gestures can go a long way.

But Seriously, How Can People Not Know About Portuguese?

Let’s be honest, geography isn’t exactly everyone’s strong suit.  But hey, now you’re in the know! So, spread the word – Portuguese is out there, it’s delightful, and it deserves a place on your linguistic bucket list.

Bonus Tip: Learning a few basic phrases in Portuguese is a great way to endear yourself to the locals (and score bonus points when ordering Pastel de Nata).  Who knows, you might even impress your friends with your newfound knowledge of this fascinating, under-appreciated language.
